Charging Cable or EVSE, Understanding the Difference

Hello everyone! If you've recently taken an interest in the fascinating world of electric vehicles (EVs), you've probably come across the terms "charging cable" and "EVSE." But what exactly do they mean? No worries, we're going to untangle all of this for you! ?⚡

What is a charging cable?

The charging cable, also known as a "Mode 3 charging cable," is an essential accessory that allows you to recharge your EV from public AC charging stations (slow charging) or from your specific home installation (private "wallbox"). This cable is quite robust and designed to withstand various weather conditions and charging demands.

Typically, there are two types of charging cables, based on the type of connectors:

1. Type 1 to Type 2: Initially used for American or Asian brand vehicles. These are now found only on the first generations of EVs or on recent vehicles imported from these regions.

2. Type 2 to Type 2: The most common in Europe, adapted for European charging stations.

What about the EVSE?

EVSE stands for "Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment." It is also known as a mobile charger, granny charger, portable charging station, or Mode 2 charging cable. The EVSE is actually more than just a cable; it incorporates an electronic control box that regulates the flow of electricity between a standard electrical outlet and your vehicle. This allows you to charge your EV almost anywhere, as long as you have access to a traditional electrical outlet. It's the perfect solution for top-up charges at home or at a friend's house, for example.

An EVSE is usually included with the car's delivery, although some manufacturers are starting to offer it as a paid option.

It is entirely possible to use just the EVSE for regular or even daily home charging. In this case, it's better to use a mobile charger other than the one provided with the car, as these are often limited to between 6A and 10A and are rarely adjustable.

The main differences

1. Usage:

   - Charging Cable: Ideal for public charging stations or your dedicated home station.
   - EVSE: Perfect for home use or when traveling, when no charging station is available.

2. Safety:

   - Both types of cables ensure safety during charging, but the EVSE, with its integrated control box, offers additional protection against overloads, overheating, leakage currents, and short circuits when used with non-dedicated outlets.

3. Flexibility:

   - The EVSE offers more flexibility because it can be used with any domestic outlet. However, the charging speed will generally be slower than with a charging cable used at a dedicated station.

4. Cost:

   - EVSE can be slightly more expensive due to the integrated electronics. However, they can save you the installation of a home charging station in some cases.

Which one to choose?

Your choice will depend on your lifestyle and charging needs. If you often travel and have access to slow public charging stations, a Mode 3 charging cable is a must. On the other hand, if you need a more versatile solution and often find yourself away from a charging station, an EVSE can be an excellent backup solution.

A solution that combines these two types of cables is the Mobility Dock. This is a portable station for domestic outlets that uses a Mode 3 charging cable. It's a good compromise that saves space in the car by carrying just one cable + the small box of the Mobility Dock.

I hope this article has helped you see more clearly between these two charging options for your electric vehicle. Safe travels and charge with peace of mind! ??
